Hello Everyone !!
Happy Chinese New Year!!
I hope that 2017 has been amazing for you already and that you're feeling for a fabulous fresh start. I know I am happy to get this party started :)
First, let’s celebrate ~
On January 28th, 2017, the new moon bids goodbye to The Fire Monkey and beckons in the energy of the Fire Rooster.
Let's welcome the fresh energy into our lives. This last year has been such an energetic year with the Fire Monkey challenging us in so many mischievous ways. Now, the proud Fire Rooster has arrived to bring bright and happy days.
Gong Hay Fa Choy !!
This is a greeting we use to wish someone Happy New Year.
It means “Wishing you more wealth !!"
I learned this tradition from my family who came to Canada from Canton, China at the turn of the century. They spoke a Cantonese dialect called “Toysan." In later years, my father also learned Mandarin and our family business was in Vancouver’s Chinatown.
I've always loved our family traditions around this time of year, with delicious dishes, each symbolizing all the good wishes we wanted to attract into our lives ~ long noodles expressing long life, red envelopes of money to bring in abundance. My father was always making predictions about how the last year affected our fortunes and how the new year needed to be approached.
We celebrated with family and friends at our favourite Chinese Restaurants at big round tables full of food and cheer for everyone. Children ran between tables and waiters navigated trolleys of yet more hot steaming dishes. Whole steamed fish platters with ginger, scallions and soy symbolizing hope for businesses to successfully cruise forward without obstacles.
Pork bellies represented more fortune, more wealth. Red was good luck and Gold was prosperity. Oranges for more luck and wealth. Fortune cookies were simply fun for the children.
I will be with my friends celebrating Chinese New Years ~ and I’ll be popping on Facebook Live all week at 3 pm EST to bring you daily messages on how to make the most out of the new energy of the Fire Rooster. I’ll have fun talking about the 5 elements, Feng shui and lucky numbers.
Come and join in the fun. If you have questions, I will happily answer them live. I hope you can join me for a fun week of celebrations!!
Gong Hay Fa Choy !!
May this auspicious Year of the Fire Rooster bring you many blessings.
Much Love,
Cydney
